Secrets of the Microbiome

If you tested the bacterial profile of each of these five piles of compost, they would all be different. Why?

Because the inputs (i.e. the environment or 'terrain') are different.

Each pile contains different types of organic matter, and has been exposed to different amounts of sunlight, air, and water. These inputs determine the microbial profile.

The soil is not healthy or sick because of the bacteria. The bacteria are simply a reflection (i.e. consequence) of the inputs.

Similarly, your gut microbiome is determined entirely by inputs.

The food you eat, the water you drink, the thoughts you think, the air you breathe, the exercise you do, and the sleep you get, all determine your bacterial profile.

It's a futile exercise to test the microbiome to work out why you are sick or why you are healthy because the bacteria are not the determining factor. The inputs are.

The germ is nothing, the terrain is everything.
